difference is that sprites mean any 2D image in a game. obviously pixel art makes up most of the content up until PCs became more powerful. the catch is that drawings can be sprites too. it's a simple thing, not worth going into actually haha, but there's lots of other "definition clashes" that are much worse

I only realized sprites aren't the same as pixel art when I used sonic battle sprite sheets...
