What's the payment rate for free-lance animators. Is it by hour or length of the animation and how does it vary in animation style?

I've already googled it but I want to see if it varies. I need to hear it from real people~
It goes by the hour. At least thats what I used to do when freelancing. Some people do have set prices but that's mostly commercial work. I did anywhere between 12-30 dollars an hour. Mainly higher prices for 3D work or work that required multiple programs. Anything harder pretty much. Hope that helps?
