So I've animate Maple so infrequently that I'm practically new to the whole thing. So any advice on how to go about it when I'm experienced in other forms like the illustrious Bonic the Ledgehog.

You're eligible to use maple mouths now.
Spoiler
It's really just a matter of trial and error, see what works and what doesn't as you experiment with relatively larger sprites with more defined expressions. I didn't have any problems animating other sprites as a maple animator but it may not work the other way around, you'll never know unless you try.

As someone who originally animated Sonic Characters before going to Maple, I'll say that fundamentally, everything is the same. A few pointers I'd like to make are:

1.) Don't have that stupid mentality of stubbornly sticking with the default basic sheet and learn how to sprite customs, whether you're editing pose templates or creating your own from scratch.

2. Learn how to create different head angles for your characters. This is for the sake of having more variety in your shots, instead of all of your overall cinematography just being linear and monotonous. (Make sure you also experiment with different kinds of hands instead of just making your character have a deformed nub for a hand.)

3. Become as proficient and skilled in rigging as possible, especially with the default basic sheets.

4. Because of the anatomy of MapleStory sprites, undertaking complex and dynamic hand-to-hand combat choreography will be a lot more difficult, if not downright impossible in certain situations. Regardless of this, make sure you have at least the 360 degree head angle rotations for your characters, so that way you won't be as limited in that regard. It is still most definitely possible, so do not let the big fucking heads that MapleStory characters have be too much of a hindrance.

5. One advantage of MapleStory characters having big heads and eyes is that you can convey so much more emotions than other kinds of sprites, as well as being able to apply subtlety in said emotions.

Keep these things in mind, and you're good to go. MapleStory sprites are a great way to get into the world of actual OCs, as opposed to just using Sonic Fan Characters.
