Before Guo Jing was born, his father, Guo Xiaotian and his sworn brother lived together in a village during the Song dynasty. Both of them had a loving wife and were pregnant with their child together. His sworn brother's child, Yang Kang and Guo Jing were made to be sworn brothers even before he was born. One night, evil Jin invaders attacked the two fathers. Guo Jing's father bore the brunt of the assault, allowing his wife, sworn brother and his wife to escape. Unfortunately, Guo Jing's father died during the exchange. His sworn brother was injured and lost his wife amidst the chaos. It was then found out that the Jin Prince had launched the attack as he fancied Yang Kang's mother. Guo Jing's mother escaped successfully.
Guo Xiaotian's Taoist priest friend heard about the news. He found 7 martial artists, named the Seven Freaks of Jiangnan, challenging them to a duel. The priest said that he would teach Yang Kang martial arts, and they would do the same, but to Guo Jing. And after 18 years, they would bring their disciples to a restaurant for a showdown. After the Seven Freaks of Jiangnan accepted, they found Guo Jing's mother and they moved to Mongolia and met Genghis Khan. He offered to give them a place to stay.
Guo Jing was slow at learning as he had a simple mind. When he was 18 years old, his mother told him to look for his long-lost sworn brother, Yang Kang in the Central Plains and also avenge his father. Guo Jing and his teachers went back to the Central Plains. There, Guo Jing met a young lady, Huang Rong. She was witty and resourceful, a complete opposite of Guo Jing. Both of them were in the forest one day when they met one of the Five Greats at that time, Northern Beggar Hong Qigong. Huang Rong somehow convinced him to teach Guo Jing his celebrated skills, 18 Subduing Dragon Palms.
After finding his brother and avenging his father, Guo Jing and Huang Rong roamed the pugilist world together. Huang Rong wanted to make Guo Jing the most powerful martial artist in the world. Guo Jing mistakenly learnt the most desired skill, Nine Yin Manual, making him insanely strong. Then, he imparted 72-Styles Vacant Fist and Technique of Ambidexterity from an old man he found in a cave. With this few skill sets, he was able to defeat many experienced martial artist at the young age of 20.

Guo Jing is a simple and kind-hearted man. He is a slow-learner and often mocked at by his teachers. His father-in-law did not agree to his marriage at first because of his intellect. However, Guo Jing is a sincere and hardworking person which makes up for his stupidity. Although he possessed powerful skills, he often get defeated by pugilist martial artist because he did not think well. Ironically, he doesn't like fighting and believes in the saying 'Retribution is a vicious cycle'.
