-Time limit: For as long as your selected clip permits.
-Theme: Replicate an anime Moment using maple sprites.
-Original Due Dateeadline: August 9th (Pushed back 2 days)

My Notes: Thanks to hyper for accepting this MBR. I made this in about a day and it was pretty damn fun. If you're wondering why I'm using Alicia in this animation, she's the only female whose sprites I have and errrrr maplesim is down so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

His Notes: Well the time is now to show what i’m capable of (but thanks to windows 10 i guess we will have to wait some other time) This is my first MBR and it definitely taught me a lot in terms of time management. I had so many ambitious ideas yet could only manage to create so little. ¼ of its due to some technical difficulties but the other ¾ was due experimentation and rough ideas that never got to see the light of day. In the end I hope you enjoyed this animation.

MANIAC: Looked great during the production, and looked great in the end. I guess the only thing is, during the last part, it doesn't look like he's falling, since the background is stationary. Otherwise, nice job, man.

And why the 1970's-esque screen / sound quality?...
Other problems are pointed out above, but.. unique animation, nonetheless

Really don't have a lot to say about this whole MBR, but...
    Vote goes to Maniac

It'd be cool if you linked/wrote the anime title/episode you referenced for people who don't watch a lot of anime (like myself) ; w ; But that aside...

    Good job to you both!!
Maniac -- Very entertaining to watch, felt like an actual anime scene ^o^ Also really liked the rigs/different perspectives/angles of the poses, pretty effects like the shiny/green veins on his arm, and how you animated the build up until the punch smash! (Also the legs at the end LOL AM I MISSING SOMETHING? oAo ;; )
Hyper -- I actually really liked the (as Droo describes it) the 1970's-eqsue aesthetic! Takes me back to old-fashioned anime style when I watched YuGiOh 'Season 0' and YYH. xD It's a shame you couldn't finish, but this is your first one, right? Here's to hoping your future ones are finished!

A MBR that's not a generic 10 second bashing fight scene. Bless you both.

Although you were referencing an actual anime scene, I really appreciate your eye for camera work and dynamic visual aesthetics, Maniac (if you've been around long enough, you'll hear me talk about cinematography in Maple animations a lot because I'm a film major nerd lol). The production value in your editing and shot choice was fantastic, and most of the POVs and visual effects worked really well! Some of the custom poses/rigging came off a little odd and misplaced (like the left arm at 1:20 connected to his face LOL) but nevertheless I REALLY admire the ambition and effort. Nicely done :)

As for Hyper, I agree with Tracey. The late 70s/80s look might have been the most interesting stylistic choice I've seen in any Maple animation. Very nostalgically impressive. Just uh...make sure you polish your raw animation a bit. You shouldn't leave stuff like this in a final cut lol.

They say in movies, the eyes are the most important part of character visual expression. Couldn't be more true here, as I legit struggled in understanding how these characters were reacting to each other (before watching the reference that is). As for other movements and stylistic choices...

    [IMG][IMG]
...I GUESS this works in terms of accuracy, but it is rather strange to look at in Maple context LOL

Overall, there were some questionable moments, but you guys tried a lot of different things that sparked eye-opening creativity. Stick around long enough, and I think it would be very exciting to see how your animating styles gradually unfold.

This is one of the best matches in a while, imo. Nice work guys, keep at it~

I watched each of these animations one time before scrolling down to write this. Also, I didn't pause the video to jot down any notes. I do admit I replayed the video for the stolen meme screenshot, but other than that... this is actually my first impression of each of these animations. I should also mention that my intention is to help you both work on focusing your strengths and minimizing your weaknesses. Please note, everybody has both strengths and weaknesses, so that's perfectly normal! Let's get you guys on a general-purpose road to sprite animator stardom!
Or, at least its general direction... [IMG]

    For @HyperBlue
Positive things: The filters helped really tie the reference together. Even though it's a bit much, I still think I'd prefer this version with the effects more than a version that didn't even include them at all. I really got the sense of "Oh DAMN this is a VHS tape! Is that the... Sonic Movie!?", well before it became obvious. The color and bloom looked less like mimicry and more like authenticity. I really appreciated that element of the animation, and it bumped my vote up quite a lot. The character placement was sometimes a bit dodgy, but I understood the camera shifts and sense of direction pretty well.

Negative things: Now, try not to be discouraged, I know there's a lot of details in the "negative section" of this post, but hold on. I want to help you overcome these, not just point them out and act like there's nothing good.

There was a SERIOUS lack of movement throughout the animation. And I get it, half of it is a talking scene. There's not a lot of action going on... but that's exactly what a hand-drawn film looked like back when the infamous "Sonic Movie" was made. Anime artists can be very lazy, and other times, anime production studios have no choice but to cut corners. Sometimes that's fine... But the issue is that you're not an anime studio blowing a small budget, or a single artist drawing every frame. The lack of movement and detail here is really hurting the overall video for me. In the little amount of actual movement (tweens, etc) that I DID notice, there were some hard-to-miss caveats that I saw first time.

(Again, I only watched each of them once to give a genuine first-impression about what I saw.)

Another thing, was the ... well, the faces. Not just the lack of face that @CCshinobi pointed out, but the general lack of expression given when there IS a face present. Our dashing (NOT A PUN), cocky and over-confident protagonist lost everything he had to earn him a movie in the first place. He lost his attitude and charm when he lacked any understandable subtitles / dialogue. He lacked his over-confidence when he had no eyes to glare with. I know we make fun of "TCH" grins all the time on Maplemation, but SONIC THE GODDAMN HE-TCH-HOG-- OF ALL CHARACTERS IN THE WORLD FUCKING PIONEERED THAT SHIT. It-- sadly would've made perfect sense to include it, even if it was forced in as a joke.

Aside from not having that half-iconic, half-mediocre moment, this character didn't really have an expression much of anywhere. That's, during dialogue, that's when his face went for a coffee break, and that's in-battle. Your character didn't seem to care. He wasn't standing up for himself, he wasn't confident he'd win, he wasn't questioning if he'd lose, he wasn't struggling to overcome or ward off any attacks... he just-- attended the battle he was faced with.

That REALLY hurt my impression of this video. It seemed almost as if our protagonist didn't need to be there at all, and to audiences, that is a death-sentence for attention spans. Give him a reason to be there. He cannot be a bystander in his own fight scene.

    For @MizutoManiac
Positive things: The rocks set in front of and behind Alicia really set the tone and helped describe the situation. The use of 2.5D. although it rarely looks great in sprite animations, really shined on the city buildings. Obviously, city buildings are fairly flat surfaces ANYWAY, but I wanted to highlight the fact that this very thing is really one of the only times it makes absolutely perfect sense to use flat-looking sprites in 3D space. It did well, and helped to tie the camera angles together too. There is a common issue with the use of 2.5D, but that's really for the section down below.

    Negative things:
That's me looking at the 2.5D bushes and other background elements throughout the animation, and staring at the background during the front-view portion... There were definitely some good-looking sections of this animation, but uhh. I get the fact that we're using 2D sprites and using perspective to display them, but everything looked, ironically-- way too flat. Pushing those 2D planes into 3D really just drew out their lack of dimension. Putting 2D into 3D made everything stick out like a sore thumb. And regarding 0:15, I think I'd be scared too if the world and the sky met face-to-face like that. I mean, he looks to be a short distance away, but this isn't Minecraft-- is this world really PERFECTLY flat? Next time, add some non-2.5D bushes (aligned with the camera) in place of the skewed ones, and add something to block the horizon. It looked like an incomplete movie set more than a city, or even a tiny little village/neighborhood.

Hot DAMN that was a lot to write from memory... Time to pass out.

I have to go with Maniac

    i like both animations but

maniacs animation seems like he put more effort into the animation
also his animation went perfectly with the anime he referred

vs Hyper who made a decent animation but seemed rushed
and just had a nice tv like filter to it but seemed like a incomplete animation
also i couldn't tell which part of the sonic fight was referred with your animation

either way great work to the both of you but im going with maniac
